Funny magician Penn Jillete – the vocal half of the successful magic group Penn & Teller – recently dropped $3.3 million on a 7,800 square foot family home just outside of Las Vegas.
The contemporary property was initially listed in the fall of 2014 for $3.675 million. Prior to that, the home sold in February 2010 for $2.6 million.
The new home is a far cry from Jillette’s previous “ultimate bachelor pad.” The 5-bedroom, 7-bathroom behemoth boasts massive open concept living areas, including a kitchen with an eating and cooking island, a theater room, a wine cellar, a family room with a wet bar, and a great room that spans two stories.
The master bedroom offers one bathroom and one closet each, as well as a steam shower, Jacuzzi tub, and a huge balcony.
For just over $3 mil, Jillette and his family – including wife Emily, and two children Zolten and Moxie – enjoy amazing views of the infamous Las Vegas Strip, along with the gorgeous mountains in the background.
It was the home’s indoor-outdoor feel that specifically captured the eye of Jillette. The property features disappearing pocket doors all over the place, which really opens up the interior to the outdoors. Several covered patios are sprinkled throughout the home’s adjoining pool and spa.
Another feature of the home that also peaked Jillette’s interest is the neighborhood. The new family home is located in upscale Las Vegas community ‘The Ridges,’ which is much closer to schools for his kids, as well as other families with children.
This was of particular concern to the magician, whose previous home was isolated from such amenities. What once were considered negative attributes are now positive ones for Jillette, who made the move primarily to accommodate life with children.
Lovingly dubbed “The Slammer,” Jillette’s previous home was situated in the outskirts of Las Vegas, a feature that the then-single magician loved about it. Twenty years ago, Jillette built the 12,000 square foot home, complete with hidden rooms, fire poles, and even a Scrabble bathroom.
By the time Jillette and his wife started a family, the couple realized the quirky and isolated Vegas house wasn’t exactly ideal to raise kids in. So they set out to make a number of changes and additions to the home to make it more child-friendly.
The home’s isolation was one thing the couple couldn’t change, which is why they opted for their new digs in The Ridges, a double-gated community equipped with a golf course and fitness center. Homes in this community range from $1.5 million to upwards of $30 million.
While the new home is more on the contemporary side, it’s nowhere near as remote as The Slammer.
